Dan Newman, MS, LAT, ATC

Head Athletic Trainer, Union High School, Tulsa OK


Currently, Dan Newman is in his 24th year at Union High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dan was recently named Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Performance.  Newman and his staff care for 1,500 student athletes, comprising 23 athletic programs, winning an impressive 71 state championships in that time. The staff also serve as preceptors every year to athletic training interns from University of Tulsa, and Oklahoma State University Masters Athletic Training Programs. Before Union, Dan has vast experience including Division I and NAIA college, clinical, and professional sports. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dan received his Bachelors in Athletic Training from the University of Tulsa. He then went on to earn a Masters in Kinesiology with an Emphasis in Sport Injury Management from the University Nevada, Las Vegas. 

Newman has been an active advocate of the athletic training profession throughout his entire career. He has previously served as Oklahoma Athletic Trainers’ Association President, District 5 Board of Directors, District 5 Finance Committee, National Athletic Trainers’ Association State Athletic Training Advisory Committee, and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Secondary School Athletic Trainers’ Committee. Presently, Dan serves on the KSI Medical Advisory Board; is a faculty member for the ebpCENTRAL Excellence in Secondary School Athletic Training Academy and the Oklahoma State University Health Sciences Center Athletic Training & Sports Medicine ECHO line (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes). 

Throughout Newman’s storied career, he has been recognized in 2014 with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Service Award; in 2016 with the Oklahoma Athletic Trainers’ Association Athletic Trainer of the Year Award; in 2017 with the Gatorade Secondary School Athletic Trainer of the Year Award; in 2020 as District 5 Most Distinguished Athletic Trainers Award and a finalist for the Pink Newell Athletic Trainer of the Year finalist and most recently in 2023 the Training and Conditioning Magazine Secondary School Most Valuable Athletic Trainer Award.  Most recently was inducted into the Union Athletic Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame. 

When not working or volunteering his time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, Becky, and his two daughters, Peyton, 22, and Addie, 16. He also enjoys spending time with friends, attending sporting events and traveling.
