Applied Research and Consulting
KSI provides expert consulting to organizations seeking to improve health, safety, and performance in physically demanding environments. Our team works with athletic programs, military units, occupational organizations, governing bodies, and policymakers to translate the latest scientific evidence into practical policies and procedures.
Capabilities
KSI consulting services focus on prevention, preparedness, and response to medical emergencies associated with exertion and environmental conditions. Our experts review existing policies, identify areas for improvement, and provide evidence-based recommendations to help organizations better protect the individuals they serve.
Consulting engagements may be conducted remotely through document review and virtual meetings, or through on-site visits depending on the needs of the organization.
In cases where organizations want more than guidance and are seeking to understand a specific product, strategy, or intervention for use in their unique environment, KSI offers applied research services to help respond with objective data.
Locations
All of KSI’s consulting services can be conducted at either of our locations, the primary location at UConn in Storrs, Connecticut and KSI at UNF in Jacksonville, Florida, or we can travel to requesting organizations.
Occupational Focused Consulting
Every day workers are seriously injured or die from heat stress, nearly all of which can be prevented. Heat safety strategies are effective and easy to implement, yet they are grossly underutilized within many occupational settings. We are a unique trifecta of experts, scientists, and product developers providing comprehensive heat safety solutions for organizations and their employees.
We believe, and science proves, that implementing heat-safety standards not only keeps workers safe but drives efficiency and productivity in the workplace. We help businesses enhance their safety programs to ensure that every employee returns home safely to their families.
Heat Safety Educational Materials Review/development
Review of Heat Safety Materials
A thorough review of your heat safety educational program materials by experts in the field of occupational heat safety. We will evaluate your current educational program or learning management system and provide suggestions to meet the current federal requirements for areas of concern and exceed those requirements to meet the KSI Heat Safety Standard.
Our review includes information for workers and supervisors related to:
- Recognizing heat related illnesses
- Maintaining proper hydration status
- Implementing cooling modalities and technologies
- Preparation for new or unacclimatized workers
- Monitoring environmental conditions
Development of Heat Safety Materials
We develop educational materials based on your specific work environment, worker characteristics, and the physical demands of the job. Examples might include written content or video content that can be used by your company during on boarding or annual continuing education opportunities.
Comprehensive Heat Safety Policies & Procedures Assessment
We assess your current heat safety policies to promote health and safety and productivity. We will ensure that the policies align with your current Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and ensure that your Heat Illness Prevention Plan (HIPP) includes best practices.
Services
- Initial assessment for alignment with best practice
- Identification of any gaps related to heat illness prevention, recognition, treatment and return to work protocols
- Inclusion of national and state-level requirements
- Include sections beyond emergency care, such as: non-emergent illness management, administrative procedures, appendices for quick reference
- Establish step by step procedures for each policy using a mix of text, bullets, tables and figures
- Definitions of key terms
- Outline training and education requirements for staff
- Establish approval, review structure, and annual updates for the manual
- Integration with the Emergency Action Plan
- Ensuring limited interruptions to standard work procedures
- Recommend feasible and cost-effective solutions
Emergency Action Plan Integration
We assess your current emergency action plan (EAP) and venue specific EAPs to ensure that they contain all the key components including the steps to activate/contact emergency medical services, direct them to the scene, identify the location of medical equipment and establish roles and responsibilities. We will also ensure that this plan funnels into your heat policies and procedures in the event of a heat illness.
Services
- Emergency personnel analysis
- Develop a full, tailored emergency action plan
- Test the emergency action plan (rehearse the plan) and adjust accordingly
- Facilitate initial conversation of the EAP with local EMS specific to heat
- Provide guidance on implementation and maintenance of the EAP
Guided Implementation of Environmental Monitoring Heat Stress Best Practices
We will help your company with strategies for the proper implementation of environmental monitoring based on industry standards, including work to rest ratios, hydration, and heat alerts. We account for current state laws and the specific needs of your workers based on their work rate, clothing, and PPE. We recommend ways for you to properly monitor your workplace or worksite using the most accurate and reliable devices.
Development of a Heat Illness Return to Work Protocol
We develop a step-by-step return to work protocol for workers who have suffered a heat illness, are returning from extended leave, or are new employees. We provide recommendations and develop procedures to implement and maintain return-to-work protocols.
Assistance With Wearable Technology Deployment and Integration
We advise and assist companies who are considering implementation of wearable technology for the purpose of reducing the risks of heat-related injury. More specifically physiological devices that estimate body temperature, heart rate, skin temperature, sweating, and hydration status. We evaluate the efficacy of current technologies and will align solutions with your workers’ needs.
On-site Assessments
Our most holistic service involves on-site assessment of current heat safety practices from observations and review of written heat safety protocols by KSI staff in addition to items listed above. This can include:
Assessment Prep
- Preparation of materials for visit and report (including educational materials and policies and procedures)
- Review of all heat policy documents and past heat-related injuries/illnesses
On-Site Assessment
- Observation of work (1-3 days depending on size of company)
- Environmental monitoring collection to identify “hot-spots”
- Interviews with employees and staff
- Employee physiological monitoring collection with interpretation
- Opening and closing meeting with senior safety and/or healthcare staff
Report of Findings & Recommendations
- Areas of concern related to heat safety and susceptibility to heat-related injury and illness
- SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis
- Tailored recommendations to prevent heat stress and corresponding heat strain
- Analysis of environmental conditions of workplace(s) to characterize heat vulnerable periods/events
- Create or revise written comprehensive heat safety policies and procedures
- Create or revise Emergency Action Plan
- Create or revise heat safety educational material
- Create plan to implement recommendations based on timeline outlined by safety personnel
- Additional resources
Heat stress, hydration, and cooling research to drive evidence-based decisions
Organizations implementing heat mitigation strategies, such as cooling systems, wearable technologies, or hydration solutions, should have confidence that these approaches are effective, practical, and appropriate for their workforce. KSI works with organizations to design and conduct studies that generate actionable data to support informed decision-making.
Field Based Research
Our team conducts on-site research in real-world environments, deploying advanced technologies to evaluate interventions under actual working conditions. We assess cooling systems, wearable devices, work-to-rest schedules, and other strategies to ensure findings reflect true operational demands.
Laboratory Based Research
KSI laboratories at the University of Connecticut and the University of North Florida feature state-of-the-art environmental chambers capable of simulating temperatures from 10°F to 110°F, 10–90% relative humidity, altitudes up to 12,000 feet, and solar heat load. These environments allow us to systematically evaluate heat stress and mitigation strategies under controlled conditions.
- Comparing the performance and physiological impact of different uniform textiles
- Evaluating the effectiveness of cooling garments and technologies
- Validating wearable devices for estimating core temperature and sweat rate
- Assessing the impact of heat mitigation strategies on productivity and key performance indicators
