Jay Hoffman, Ph.D., FACSM, FNSCA

Full Professor, Department of Physical Therapy, Ariel University in Israel


Jay Hoffman holds the rank of full professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Ariel University in Israel. He directs the Sport Science graduate program. Prior to coming to Ariel University, Professor Hoffman was at the University of Central Florida for 9 years. He was department chair and Director of the Institute of Exercise Physiology and Wellness. The doctoral program that he created was ranked 6th in the United States and #1 in publications relative to faculty size. Prior to UCF, Professor Hoffman worked at The College of New Jersey for 10 years, where he was the Department Chair of the Health and Exercise Science Department and the Defensive Coordinator of the College’s football team. His other leadership roles included serving as President of the Board of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) from 2009-2012, and he has also served on the Board of the USA Bobsled and Skeleton Federation. Professor Hoffman holds a unique perspective in his sport science background. Prior to his academic career, he signed free agent contracts with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL and the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL. A dual national of the USA and Israel, Dr. Hoffman commanded the Physiological Unit of the Israel Air Force and served as a Research Officer in the Combat Fitness Unit of the IDF during his military service. Dr. Hoffman has published more than 340 scientific articles and chapters in peer-reviewed journals and has written 11 books. In addition, Dr. Hoffman has lectured at more than 590 national and international conferences and meetings.

Dr. Hoffman is a fellow of both the American College of Sports Medicine and the NSCA. Dr. Hoffman honors include the 2007 Outstanding Sport Scientist of the Year from the NSCA and the 2005 Outstanding Kinesiology Professional Award from the Neag School of Education of the University of Connecticut. Dr. Hoffman’s research efforts have focused on examining exercise and nutrient intervention to increase resiliency to, or enhance recovery from various stresses. Dr. Hoffman has also been active as a coach and sport science consultant. Presently, he serves as the Head Coach for the Israel National American Football Team and the Haifa franchise of the Israel American Football League. Dr. Hoffman has also served as sports science consultant for a variety of professional sports teams, including the Orlando Magic of the NBA, the Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers of MLB, and the Dallas Stars of the NHL.
